Cinnamon French Toast with Maple Syrup

This clean-eating version of French toast uses the increasingly popular protein roll from Lidl, however you can use wholemeal bread as an alternative. In this recipe, the bread roll is halved and dipped into whisked egg and cinnamon. It is then fried in coconut oil until crisp and golden, and finished with maple syrup.

Although this dish sounds naughty, it actually provides a filling and nutritious meal. The wholemeal flour provides complex carbohydrate, while the seeds and egg provide a source of healthy fat and protein. Even maple syrup, when used sparingly, provides nutritional value in the form of essential nutrients such as calcium and zinc, it also has a lower glycaemic index than processed sugar.


  1. Break the egg into a large, shallow bowl. Add the cinnamon and milk and whisk with a balloon whisk or fork until light and fluffy.
  2. Cut the protein roll in half and put each half into the bowl with the egg mixture. Let it sit for a minute, then turn it over to soak the other side. Turn the roll over and dip each side again.
  3. In a large frying pan, heat the coconut oil until hot. Fry each piece of bread for 3-4 minutes on each side.
  4. Serve drizzled with maple syrup.
